Bio & Contact

Hi, I’m Sam, a “DATA PERSON”, based in NYC. I’ve previously worked at data-centric startups doing things like healthcare data analysis and building an open source data quality framework. I have a PhD in Semantic Web, Ontologies, OWL, Description Logic, at the University of Manchester, UK. I’m the co-founder of Manchester Girl Geeks and a frequent contributor to groups like NYC PyLadies and Women Who Code NYC.

Check out my portfolio of selected tech talks, workshops, and writing.

I am available for consulting work

I have a over a decade of experience working in data roles at startups, hiring for and building data teams, building data platforms from scratch, planning and developing projects, teaching coding workshops, and managing client relationships. What can I do for you?

  • Kick off your data platform from scratch.
  • Classic analytics engineering work: Build data pipelines with dbt, migrate SQL code and stored procedures to dbt.
  • Set up ETL processes with tools such as Stitch, Hevo, or Fivetran.
  • Build analytics dashboards with Lightdash, Tableau (I’d rather not though), Superset/Preset, or any other dashboarding tool (been there, done that).
  • Run analytics with Python/Pandas in Jupyter notebooks (or Hex!)
  • Advise engineering and product teams on how to design production systems that produces data that’s actually suitable for downstream analytics.
  • Help you build a highly functioning data team, develop an effective interview process for analytics engineers, and train or shadow interviewers.
  • Bonus: I can advise and train your team on how to do any of the above!

In addition, I love taking on any kind of teaching, prototyping, or content creation gigs:

  • I can teach intro and intermediate workshops on dbt, Apache Airflow, Python/Pandas, and any of the tools mentioned above.
  • I can test your product or tool, or create a prototype and write a tutorial, blog post, or how-to article.
  • I can write *a lot* of great documentation for your product or tool.
  • Need someone to help prep a conference talk teaching people about your product or tool? I can do that too.
