I’m Sam, the founder & CEO of Bright Nights Social (formerly Third Place Bar), an alcohol-free nightlife platform in New York City. I’ve been hosting events and writing about non-alcoholic topics since 2022.
I’m also a “DATA PERSON”, although I do less of that these days. I’ve previously worked at data-centric startups doing things like healthcare data analysis and building an open source data quality framework. I also do a lot of conference talks and workshops around data, Python, Postgres, and general data things.

I have a over a decade of experience working in data roles at startups, hiring for and building data teams, building data platforms from scratch, planning and developing projects, teaching coding workshops, and managing client relationships.
I’m currently taking on teaching, prototyping, or writing gigs:
- Advise engineering and product teams on how to design data platforms that produce data that’s actually suitable for downstream analytics.
- Teach the fundamentals of data quality and data quality tools.
- Help you build a highly functioning data team, develop an effective interview process for analytics engineers, and train or shadow interviewers.
- I can teach intro and intermediate workshops on data tools such as dbt, Apache Airflow, Python/Pandas, SQL, and PySpark.
- I can test your product or tool, or create a prototype and write a tutorial, blog post, or how-to article.
- I can write great documentation for your product or tool.
